Kitchen Staplers

I have often been asked what my kitchen staples are. With such a restrictive diet – gluten free and strict vegetarian – most people marvel at the fact that I manage to even stay alive. But with a strong background in nutrition and a love for experimenting with food, I never have pantry shortages.

What I keep on hand:


  • Rice cakes
  • Peanut butter
  • Gluten free protein bars
  • Gluten free protein powder
  • Dried beans (chickpeas, lentils, and black beans)
  • Brown rice
  • Red wine vinegar
  • Spices: salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, curry, and lemon pepper


  • Nonfat Greek yogurt (plain)
  • Milled flax seeds
  • Corn tortillas
  • String cheese
  • Feta cheese
  • Lemon juice
  • Sriracha (of course)
  • Dijon mustard


  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Tomatoes
  • Frozen raspberries
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Garlic
  • Mushrooms

These ingredients, when paired together strategically, can be used to create tons of different flavors, cuisines, and dishes. I rarely find myself buying anything else at the grocery store, making my life much more easy.

Restrictive diets (or cooking at home, in general) do not have to be boring or bland. Get creative!
